Verdict
Building an outline from a target keyword, drafting a long-form article section by section with an LLM, and suggesting internal links by crawling the user's own site rather than live rank data is a real weekend build — getting the outline structure to actually match what search intent expects, without live SERP data to check against, takes real prompt iteration. KoalaWriter's actual edge is exactly that live data: real-time SERP retrieval to see what's currently ranking, not a guess from the keyword alone.

Core loop: the user enters a target keyword and a brief description of intent (informational, comparison, how-to). The tool generates a structured outline (H2/H3 headings) using general SEO heuristics prompted into the LLM — common subtopics for that intent type, not live ranking data. The user approves or edits the outline, then the article drafts section by section against it. Separately, a one-time crawl of the user's own sitemap.xml indexes existing page titles and headings locally; while drafting, the tool suggests internal links to those existing pages where topically relevant, based on simple keyword overlap, not a trained relevance model.
Requires an Anthropic or OpenAI API key for outline and draft generation. The sitemap crawl needs only the user's own site's public sitemap URL — no API key, since it's reading a page anyone could fetch.
Do not build: live SERP scraping to see real-time rankings (a legal and infrastructure undertaking outside personal scope, and against most search engines' terms), bulk generation across many keywords in one batch, or direct CMS publishing integrations — draft locally, review, and publish manually. People pay for KoalaWriter because an outline built from general SEO heuristics is a reasonable guess at what a topic needs; an outline built from what's actually ranking today is a fact, not a guess, and that gap is exactly what live SERP retrieval buys — a personal tool without search-engine data access can't close it.
Questions
Can I import my existing KoalaWriter articles?
KoalaWriter exports articles as plain text or Markdown, which paste in directly. Its internal keyword and preset data doesn't export in a reusable form, so presets would need to be rebuilt as prompts here.
Will it work on my phone?
Reviewing and lightly editing a drafted article works on mobile. Running the sitemap crawl and reviewing outline structure is a more comfortable desktop task.
What does it cost to run?
A full article draft (outline plus several sections) costs roughly $0.20–0.50 in API usage depending on length and model. The sitemap crawl is free, local computation.
What's the one thing that doesn't survive the rebuild?
Ranking awareness. KoalaWriter can check what's actually ranking for a keyword before suggesting an outline structure; this build has no access to that data at all, so it's building an outline from general knowledge of what SEO content usually needs, not from evidence about this specific keyword today.
