Verdict

A private forum for a few dozen people — spaces, threads, magic-link login, email notifications — is a real weekend build, scoped honestly to a small group. For anything approaching Circle's real membership operations at scale, self-hosting an existing forum platform like Discourse is the more honest move than building one from scratch.

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on30.07.2026
Build a small private community site for a group of a few dozen people — not a general community platform. Members log in with a magic link sent to an email address that must already be on a fixed invite list; no passwords, no public signup. Organize posts into named spaces, each a simple list of Markdown threads with replies, sorted by latest activity. Send an email notification when someone replies to a thread you started or posted in, plus an optional daily digest of new threads, with a per-member mute toggle. Give member profiles a name, avatar, join date, and post count. Moderation is admin-only: delete a post, remove a member.

Do not build payments, memberships, course or event integration, or mobile apps — member operations at that scale are Circle's actual product. If the real need is hundreds of members or paid access, the honest move is self-hosting an existing open-source forum platform like Discourse instead of building one from scratch — say so plainly in the README.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 payments and paid memberships
  • B.2 course and live-event integration
  • B.3 polished mobile apps
  • B.4 automations and migration tooling
  • B.5 community-scale admin controls

Prior art

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: community/network/payments

Communities need real member operations — payments, access control, engagement mechanics — not just a place to post; people pay so those operations are handled, not because a forum is hard to build.

Questions

Can I import my existing Circle community?

Not automatically — Circle doesn't offer a structured export of posts and members. Migrating means re-inviting members by email and, if the discussion history matters, copying over the threads worth keeping by hand.

Will it work on my phone?

As a responsive web page, yes, for reading and posting. There's no dedicated mobile app with push notifications — email is the notification channel here.

What does it cost to run?

A small VPS and a database, typically a few dollars a month, plus a transactional email service for magic links and notifications — usually free at this scale.

What's the one thing that doesn't survive the rebuild?

Real membership operations. The moment payments, courses, or events need to plug into who gets access, that's genuine platform work — this build is honestly scoped to a free, invite-only discussion space, nothing more.
