Verdict

Selling a handful of digital downloads — a product page, hosted checkout, a signed download link delivered by email — is a real weekend build. What doesn't come with it is Podia's actual breadth: course hosting, memberships, built-in email marketing, and affiliate tooling, each real product surface on its own.

Exhibit B — What you lose

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on30.07.2026
Build a small digital-products store for selling a handful of downloads — not a course platform. Each product is defined with a name, price, description, and the file to deliver, stored outside the public web root. A buy button goes straight to a hosted checkout; a webhook on successful payment records the order and emails the buyer a signed download link that expires after a few days or a handful of uses, with a resend-by-email option if it lapses. Build a small admin view behind basic authentication showing orders and revenue per product.

Do not build memberships, drip-fed courses, email marketing, or an affiliate program, and don't build customer accounts — the receipt email is the account here. Note plainly in the README that sales tax handling is on you, and point at the payment processor's own tax feature if that ever matters.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 course hosting and drip content
  • B.2 memberships
  • B.3 built-in email marketing
  • B.4 affiliate tooling
  • B.5 customer accounts and a self-serve portal

Prior art

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: payments/content hosting/marketing

Commerce plus content delivery has a lot of edge cases — expired links, failed payments, resending a receipt — and people pay so those are already handled.

Questions

Can I import my existing Podia products and customers?

The product files and descriptions, yes — copy them into the new product list directly. Customer and order history generally doesn't need to move, since past sales are already delivered.

Will it work on my phone?

The storefront pages are responsive, so buying works fine on mobile. The admin view is usable in a pinch but isn't built mobile-first.

What does it cost to run?

Hosting, a database, and email delivery, typically a few dollars a month, plus standard payment-processing fees on actual sales.

What's the one thing that doesn't survive the rebuild?

The rest of the platform. Podia's real value is that courses, memberships, email marketing, and affiliates all live in one system; this build sells files reliably and stops there.
