Verdict

A browser-based code editor running on your own server, with an instant URL per project, is a real weekend build assembled from existing open-source parts. What doesn't come with it is Replit's actual product: a genuinely zero-setup environment, hosted AI agents, and real-time multiplayer editing.

Exhibit B — What you lose

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on30.07.2026
Build a personal cloud development environment on a server you already have: run an open-source browser-based code editor (VS Code in the browser is the natural choice) behind HTTPS with basic authentication — this is assembly of existing good parts, not a new editor. Build a small CLI that scaffolds a new project from a template folder (each with its own gitignore, README stub, and run script), with each project assigned its own port and reachable at its own subdomain automatically. Add a deploy command that restarts a project's service and a logs command that tails its output. Keep secrets in a per-project environment file that's never committed. Take a scheduled backup of all projects to a tarball.

Do not build real-time multiplayer editing, hosted AI agents, or per-project containers — one server for one person's own projects is the honest, complete scope, and that's a genuinely different product from a platform meant to onboard beginners with zero setup.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 a truly zero-setup environment with no server to maintain yourself
  • B.2 hosted AI coding agents
  • B.3 real-time multiplayer editing
  • B.4 a template and community ecosystem

Prior art

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: cloud platform/deployment

Code running in the browser immediately, with no local environment drama, is what people are actually paying for — not the code editor itself, which is open source.

Questions

Can I bring over my existing Replit projects?

Yes for the code — clone or download the repl's files and drop them into a new project folder here. Replit's own hosted secrets, always-on deployments, and multiplayer sessions don't carry over.

Will it work on my phone?

A browser-based editor technically loads on a phone browser, but real coding on a touchscreen is genuinely uncomfortable — this is realistically a laptop or desktop tool.

What does it cost to run?

One VPS and a domain, typically under ten dollars a month, running as many personal projects as it can hold — no per-project pricing.

What's the one thing that doesn't survive the rebuild?

Zero setup. Replit's whole point is that a beginner can start coding with nothing installed and nothing to configure; this build requires you to already have a server, which is exactly the setup Replit exists to skip.
