Verdict
A thin workbench over a hosted video-generation API — a prompt box, a model picker, a gallery of past generations — is a real afternoon build for someone who generates occasionally. What can't be rebuilt is the actual product: the video-generation model itself, the compute behind it, and the continuous research that keeps improving it.

Submit a generation job to a video-model API provider (pick one and stick to it — several offer current open or licensed video models), poll until it completes, download the result, and record the prompt, model, parameters, cost, and file path in a local database. Support image-to-video by letting an uploaded still be passed as the starting frame. Show a running month-to-date spend total computed from each job's real cost, so casual use stays honest about what it's actually costing.
Do not build an editing timeline, inpainting, or anything real-time — those are genuine additional product surface, not a missing feature here. Generative video quality and the inference infrastructure behind it are the actual product — a wrapper around someone else's API doesn't change who's doing the hard part.
Questions
Can I import my existing Runway generations?
The video files themselves, yes, if you've downloaded them — they're just files. Runway doesn't export prompt/generation metadata in a structured format, so that history doesn't carry over.
Will it work on my phone?
As a page with a prompt box, technically yes if hosted somewhere reachable, but generation and review are much more workable on a larger screen — treat this as a desktop tool.
What does it actually cost to run?
Hosting is a few dollars a month; the real cost is per-generation API usage, which the built-in spend tracker shows you directly — casual, occasional use is often cheaper than a flat subscription, frequent use usually isn't.
What's the one thing that genuinely doesn't survive the rebuild?
The model. Video generation quality improves from continuous, expensive research this project can't replicate — a wrapper only ever gets as good as whichever API it's calling, on that provider's schedule, not your own.
