Verdict

A personal rank tracker and on-page auditor for a site you control is a real weekend build. What isn't buildable is the actual product: a backlink index built from a web crawl running continuously for years, plus keyword volume and SERP data at a scale no personal project can match.

Exhibit B — What you lose

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on30.07.2026
Build a rank tracker and technical SEO auditor for the domains you actually control — not a general SEO platform. For rank tracking: a scheduled job that checks a list of your own keywords against a real SERP API (several have a free tier; do not scrape Google's results pages directly, you'll get blocked quickly) and stores position, ranking URL, and date in a small database, with a simple dashboard showing the trend per keyword. For the audit half: a crawler limited to your own domain that follows internal links and flags the basics — broken links, missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, redirect chains, thin pages — written to a plain report. Pull your real click and impression data for free from the Google Search Console API and show it next to your rank data; budget real time for the OAuth setup, it's the fiddly part. Run this on a schedule with no accounts beyond the API keys it needs.

Do not attempt to build a backlink index, a keyword database, or competitor research on other people's sites — that requires crawling the entire web continuously, which is exactly what you're paying Ahrefs to have already done.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 the backlink index
  • B.2 keyword volume and difficulty data
  • B.3 years of historical trend data
  • B.4 competitive research on other people's sites
  • B.5 AI-search visibility data

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: proprietary data/crawler scale

Ahrefs sells a dataset, not a dashboard — a web crawl run continuously for years plus licensed keyword and clickstream data. No amount of personal engineering reproduces that alone, in a weekend or ever.

Questions

Can I import my existing Ahrefs data — my backlink history, my tracked keywords?

Your tracked keyword list, yes — that's just a text file you maintain yourself. The backlink index and historical crawl data cannot be exported or rebuilt; that data only exists inside Ahrefs' own crawl.

Will it work on my phone?

The dashboard is a small web page, so it renders on a phone browser if you expose it on your network, but there's no dedicated app and no push alerts — you'd have to remember to check it.

What does it actually cost to run?

A SERP API's free tier usually covers a personal keyword list, and Search Console access is free. Budget a few dollars a month once you outgrow the free tier — a rounding error next to Ahrefs' Starter plan.

What's the one thing that genuinely doesn't survive the rebuild?

Anyone else's site. You can track and audit your own domain all day; you cannot see who links to a competitor or what they rank for — that visibility is the entire product, and it only exists because Ahrefs already crawled it.
