Verdict

A content-brief-and-scoring CLI — fetch top-ranking pages for a keyword, extract common terms and structure, generate a brief, score a draft against it — is a real weekend build wrapping a search API and a model. What doesn't come with it is Surfer's reliable SERP data pipeline, its scoring model tuned over years, and an integrated writing editor.

Exhibit B — What you lose

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on30.07.2026
Build a content-brief and draft-scoring tool: given a keyword, fetch the top-ranking pages from a real search API, extract each page's title, headings, and body text. Compute simple term-frequency statistics across the results — median word count, recurring subtopics, the most frequent meaningful terms — without any dedicated NLP service. Send that analysis to an LLM to produce a brief: a suggested outline, a target word count, and terms and questions to cover. Build a separate scoring command that compares a draft against a previously generated brief, printing a coverage percentage and a list of missing terms. Cache every fetched page and API response so re-running a brief costs nothing extra.

Do not build a writing editor with live scoring, site audits, or rank tracking — this outputs Markdown briefs you write against in your own editor, and page scraping will occasionally break on some sites, which is worth saying plainly in the README rather than pretending otherwise.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 a maintained, reliable SERP data pipeline
  • B.2 a scoring model tuned over years of results
  • B.3 an integrated writing editor with live scoring
  • B.4 AI article generation workflows
  • B.5 site audits

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: data access/workflow/model wrapper

Content optimization needs repeatable data and an editor writers will actually use — people pay for both being already assembled and kept working, not because term-frequency analysis is hard.

Questions

Can I import my existing Surfer SEO briefs?

Not really — Surfer's briefs live in its own editor with no structured export. Regenerating a brief for a keyword you've already researched is quick, since the tool does the same lookup fresh.

Will it work on my phone?

No — this is a command-line tool producing plain Markdown files meant to be opened in a real text editor, not a phone task.

What does it actually cost to run?

A search API call plus an LLM call per brief, typically a few cents to a few dollars depending on the API tier — no ongoing hosting cost since it runs locally.

What's the one thing that doesn't survive the rebuild?

A maintained scoring model. Surfer's term and structure scoring has been tuned against a large, continuously refreshed sample of real rankings; this build's term-frequency analysis is a reasonable approximation, not the same calibrated model.
