Verdict

Visme's difference from a general design tool is that its output is interactive: hotspots that reveal detail, tabs, click-through steps, embedded charts. Emitting that as a self-contained HTML document is a real project — the interaction model has to be authored visually and then survive export with keyboard access and no external dependencies. It is a few days of work, and what you cannot rebuild is the reason people choose Visme, which is thousands of templates that already look designed.

Exhibit B — What you lose

Exhibit A — The prompt

Received on31.07.2026
Build an interactive document composer whose output is a single self-contained HTML file.

Document model: a sequence of blocks in a fixed-width column, or a slide-per-screen mode for presentation output. Block types: heading, text, image, chart, table, quote, and three interactive types described below.

Interactive blocks, which are the point of this build:

- Hotspot image: an image with markers placed on it, each revealing a small panel of text on click or keyboard focus. Placement is by percentage of the image, so it survives resizing.
- Tabs: a set of labelled panels, one visible at a time.
- Reveal sequence: a set of steps shown one at a time with previous and next controls, for walking a reader through a process.

Accessibility is not optional here, because interactivity is where documents usually become unusable. Every interactive element must be a real button or a tab pattern with correct ARIA roles, operable by keyboard, with visible focus and a sensible tab order. Test with the keyboard only before considering any interaction finished.

Charts: generated from pasted CSV, styled from the theme tokens, rendered as inline SVG with a data table alternative available so the content is readable without the picture.

Theme: a token file with a type scale, palette, spacing and radius. Blocks consume tokens only.

Export, which is where the effort concentrates: a single HTML file with all CSS inlined, all JavaScript inlined and under a few kilobytes, images embedded as data URIs or written alongside as the user chooses, and fonts either embedded or falling back to system stacks. The file must open from a local disk with no network access and behave identically. That constraint is what makes the output shareable by email, and it should be tested with the network disabled.

Also export: a static PDF where every interactive block is flattened to its full content — every tab panel, every reveal step, every hotspot with its text — because a PDF that shows only the first tab is a broken document.

Storage: the document as JSON on disk with referenced assets, so it lives in a repository.

Out of scope: a template library, stock asset collections, real-time collaboration, hosted sharing and view analytics, and video or animated export.

Opening prefills the prompt — press enter to run it.

Exhibit B — What you lose

  • B.1 the template library and the stock asset collections
  • B.2 real-time collaboration and brand-kit governance
  • B.3 the view analytics on a shared document
  • B.4 hosted sharing with a link

Prior art

Exhibit C — Why people still pay: editor polish, assets, collaboration, and distribution

Because the templates are the product for most of its users, and a well-built interactive editor with three themes still produces something that looks homemade next to a designed template.

Questions

Can I export a Visme project?

As PDF, PNG and sometimes HTML, none of which is an editable source. A project is rebuilt here, and the interactive parts in particular have to be re-authored since no export preserves them as structure.

Why insist on a single self-contained file?

Because that is what makes an interactive document shareable. A folder of assets breaks the moment it is emailed, and a hosted link stops working when you stop paying. One file that opens offline is the only form of interactive document that genuinely outlives the tool that made it.

What does it cost to run?

Nothing. Local editor, local export, no account and no keys. The output file is yours and has no dependency on anything.

What is the one thing that does not survive the rebuild?

Looking professional without a designer. Visme's library means a first attempt looks finished; an empty editor with three themes means a first attempt looks like a first attempt, and for a document meant to persuade somebody that is most of the value gone.
